Authors
Johan Bojer 1872-1959
Johan Bojer's books are familiar to readers all over the world. Although he lived and wrote in Norway for the most part, his books commanded a wide and international audience. His best known novels, often spoke of as a trilogy, are "The Last Viking", "the Emigrants" and "People by the Sea". They tell the story of the end of fishing in open, non-motorized boats, the emigration to America and, finally, the story of those who stayed in Norway. Bojer spent some time living in America while doing research for "The Emigrants," and as the books tell us, he was concerned for the most part about the destinies of ordinary working people from small villages in Norway: What does it mean to pull up roots and settle down in a completely different environment? How does it feel to have total freedom of religion? What does it do to one's identify to see only an endless horizon after growing up between steep mountains and rough seas? Bojer chose to write about people from Rissa, where he had grown up, using the names and stories of real people as authentic details in his fiction. See Wendy Winkelman if you would like to read the book, "The Emigrants".
